Embracing a Day of Yes: The Power of Saying Yes in Your Daily Life

If you haven't had the chance to watch "Yes Day," a movie featuring Jennifer Garner, I highly recommend it. It's a delightful film that really resonated with me and inspired me to write this blog post.

Lately, I've been thinking about how often I turn down opportunities – as a parent, a partner, a friend, and even for myself. "No" has become a common word in my daily life. I believe we all rely on it too much. Just imagine the freedom that could come from embracing a day of saying yes. I understand that, like in the movie, things can quickly get out of hand. But what if you adopted this mindset in certain parts of your life?

For instance, spending quality time with your children. I have to admit that I sometimes miss out on joining them on the floor to play. It's not that I never do it, but I can easily get caught up in the responsibilities of being an adult, causing me to overlook the importance of those moments. Similarly, turning down the opportunity to read one more bedtime story. Being an adult can be exhausting, with work, bills, chores, and parenting all piling up, making you just want to collapse into bed at the end of the day. Yet, I often wonder, what if I had read that extra story? Would those few minutes have made a difference? Probably not for me, but for them? Definitely.

Reflecting on my tendency to say "no," I've realized that I use this word frequently in various aspects of my life, including my relationships with my husband, friends, and family. I often fall back on "too tired" or "too busy," which essentially means the same as "no." Does this resonate with you? If so, go easy on yourself. Life can be draining, and there are times when saying no is necessary for self-care. We get so used to this response that we fail to see what or who we're missing out on. Would that trip have been worth it? Absolutely. Would it have been difficult to make it happen? Probably not. And dedicating an hour to watching a show with your spouse, would that have been too time-consuming? No, it wouldn't have been.

Finally, as usual, I prioritize myself last. How often do I neglect my own needs? This is probably where I say no the most. Whether it's being too lazy to take a leisurely walk, skipping a relaxing bath due to tiredness and opting for a quick shower, or not making time to meet friends because of guilt about leaving my children. How often does this happen to any parent? How easy is it to say yes to these simple things? Very easy.

So say yes to a day of joy, yes to a day of fun, yes to a day of creating memories, and yes to a day for yourself. I'm challenging myself to start saying yes to these incredibly simple things. And I challenge you to do the same. Take a moment to think about what you're about to say no to and consider if maybe it could be something you say yes to instead and how freeing that might feel. Imagine how great it would feel to get on the floor and be a kid again, how going on that trip could be a new adventure, and how enjoying that walk could be the first step to loving yourself a little more.
